Rockford Nursing Home Resident Files Lawsuit After Fracturing All 4 Limbs

A Winnebago County man who fractured all four limbs earlier this year inside a Rockford nursing home has filed a lawsuit against the center, contending its negligence caused his injuries.

. . ."Certainly it was painful. There was no doubt out that," Adamik's Deerfield-based attorney, Craig M. Sandberg, told the Register Star. A different kind of suffering, however, is even more important, he said." For someone who's already in a nursing home, they want every element available to them for independence. When you lose the ability to use all four limbs at the same time, that affects your ability to function independently," Sandberg said. "We all want our independence, or to do as mush as we can independently."

. . ."My hope and Karl's hope is the lawsuit serves as a catalyst," Sandberg said. The lawsuit could "help change the way the facility functions so things like this don't happen to anyone else."

Forest City staff are accused of negligence and violating Illinois' Nursing Home Care Act for failing to use a special belt, provide protections against falls and use two employees to help Adamik -- who had a history of falls, according to the lawsuit. "The reality of it is she (the aide) was required to function with a gait belt or a second (person to) assist," Sandberg said. "These homes, they them as lean as they can" to maximize profits. . .
